Karen Walker dress, blazer and coat, Vintage boots, Triwa watch

Over the past couple of years, my wardrobe has been a slowly revolving door for clothing - as something came in, something else would inevitably be on its way out. I've always been quick to pick up on what I no longer wear, selling it on to a happy home, and using the extra cash to put towards future purchases, without ever giving it a second thought. My regret would usually be more for having made the wrong purchase, than for getting rid of it.

The Karen Walker dress pictured above, is one of the few things that I wish still hung in my closet, but currently doesn't. I think it may have been one of the things that didn't make it through my pre-USA cull, which was dreadfully ruthless, although what is probably more surprising is that I don't regret any of the other things that I let go.

I'm of the belief that one person can only wear so much, and with how easy it can be to accumulate a large amount in a short time, I'm inclined to keep a well edited closet that isn't bursting at the seams. How do you manage an overflowing wardrobe? Do you keep it at a manageable level or like me, do you sell things on?

  2. I think you're doing pretty well if you're only regretting selling one item out of the many you have culled - a sign you're definitely doing the right thing!

I'm constantly culling and I don't think I've really regretted selling anything. if I do it's usually only for a moment, in a sort of 'oh that skirt would have been perfect for this outfit' kind of way, but it always passes.

it is a very cute dress though, maybe if you keep thinking about it try to find it on eBay? xx

    1. I think you just accept your wardrobe as it is without whatever you parted with. I've considered doing a list of everything that I've sold but know I shouldn't (I'd estimate about 600 or so things from my wardrobe over the past three years... eek!). Have been on the lookout on Trade Me and eBay.. I'm sure it will pop up someday :)

  10. Cute dress! And i'm definitely a hoarder. I have clothes from so long ago that I haven't worn for ages, but i keep everything just in case i might wear it again someday :p Though I would love some cash for the clothes that i never wear, i just find the whole process too complicated. Where do you sell your clothes? ebay?

    1. I sell them on Trade Me (a NZ only site) or eBay, depending on what it is. I tried the blog shop thing once... haha.

  11. I completely agree with your editing theory. I do a giant purge twice a year. I rarely (if ever!) regret my decisions and typical am happy for the new perspective. The pieces that survive hold some value (intrinsic or otherwise) and are things that I want to carry throughout the years.

  14. I do a bit of a cull but then think 'no, i might wear that' or 'i can't sell it for anywhere near what i paid for it' thus leaving me with a wardrobe that is busting at the seams. I'd love to be more ruthless! As for the spike earrings they are SUPER comfortable ... barely even know i'm wearing them.

  19. Aw, I love the print of that dress - at least the money from it probably went towards something just as fabulous! I'm terrible with letting things go. I'm not a huge buyer, and I only started buying mroe clothes when I left high school (no more uniform), but I never donate/sell anything, so my wardrobe is gradually getting more and more crammed. I'll probably have to face the music one of these days, and get a bag of stuff together for Vinnies!

  27. Nooooo! I love that dress. I have a similar dress in the same print and it's one of the few dresses that still fits my bump - it's so roomy! I wore it out for dinner on the weekend.

I sell things too, sometimes even stuff I haven't even worn - oops. Or isn't my style anymore. Only designer stuff in good condition though, otherwise I give a lot to charity. I find it hard to part with things but don't often regret it badly. I always try to remember the reason I first decided to part with it.

  28. I'm quite slow to let stuff go, but for the most part, I've learned to be more or less a one in-one out kinda' person with my closet. Not to rub it in any further, that dress' print is nice (sorry:p)

  29. Ooh that print is so nice! I'd love to own something by Karen Walker one day, I just love the vibe of her clothing. Anyway, I'm getting more and more ruthless when I cull now. I have a tendency to buy larger sizes when mine has run out, but now I just sell them on if they don't work in my wardrobe. I sort of do regret it when I've sold something lovely and that will be hard to find, but in the end, satisfaction with fit > keeping the item xx
